Ways of Counseling
My professional orientation to counseling has been heavily influenced and supported by the Cheston article we read in CNS 741 titled, A New Paradigm for Teaching Counseling Theory and Practice. The article divides counseling theory into three parts: (1) a way of being; (2) a way of understanding; and (3) a way of intervening. This ways paradigm really helped me better understand and embrace an eclectic approach to counseling. Previous to the article, I had been very resistant to embracing CBT interventions because I did not agree with CBT's way of being and all of its way of understanding. This article really gave me permission to embrace both the person centered way of being and way of understanding and blend those with CBT interventions. I have feel very good about this person centered/CBT eclectic approach and I give credit Cheston's ways' paradigm a lot credit for giving me a clear method to understand what parts of each theory made the most sense to me and how to coherently combine those parts. As I move forward, I want to continue to explore other theories and continue to consider whether other ways might make sense to integrate. I am currently exploring attachment theory as a way of understanding.
